Very useful in its own right, but it also makes me think about staff development and how it needs to go from being administrative to being "relational." Also thinking about how professional development needs to be more growth-oriented.

Sun, 29 Jun 2008 06:36:36 -0700 Is the "1% Rule" a Sign of How Disempowered Most People Are? http://michelemmartin.posterous.com/is-the-1-rule-a-sign-of-how-di http://michelemmartin.posterous.com/is-the-1-rule-a-sign-of-how-di If 90% of people online are lurkers and only 1% are creators in a regular way, what does this say about how empowered people feel to act in their lives? This isn't to say that acting online is the sole measure of people acting in their lives--or even that people who create online or more likely to act in "the real world."  But it does make me wonder about whether or not this is symptomatic of fundamental passivity. Certainly lurking is part of shifting from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0. People initially saw the Web as a form of TV (the ultimate developer of passivity) and making the switch to a more active mode takes time. I guess what's disturbing to me about this is if online behavior is somehow indicative of general levels of empowerment, then I'm very bothered by the idea that disempowerment is the default mode for 90% of people.

I'd argue that workplace learning does the same thing.

Sun, 29 Jun 2008 03:10:34 -0700 My First Posterous Post http://michelemmartin.posterous.com/my-first-posterous-post-10 http://michelemmartin.posterous.com/my-first-posterous-post-10 Just testing out posterous, which allows me to email my posts to create a Posterous blog. What's cool is that I can actually CREATE my blog via email without even signing up. I can also read and respond to comments via email. A great way to use your cell phone for blogging. It could also be the blog that gets non-bloggers started since they can interface with it through their email.
